I. LÝ THUYẾT
A) Cách sử dụng “although, despite, in spite of”
► Although, despite, in spite of thường được sử dụng để làm nổi bật sự tương phản giữa hai hành động (hai mẩu thông tin) ở trong cùng một câu.
Although thường được đặt trước một mệnh đề và despite, in spite of đứng trước một danh từ (noun) hoặc một cụm danh từ (noun phrase).
1) Cách dùng although
► Cấu trúc: Although + subject + verb
Ex: Although he is tired, he stilll plays basketball.
Although it is snowing, we still go outside.
2. Cách dùng despite/ in spite of
► Cấu trúc: despite/ in spite of + noun/ noun phrase
Ex: Despite/ in spite of being tired, he takes part in the show.
Despite/ in spite of raining heavily, we go camping.
Lưu ý: Khi dùng although, despite, in spite of ta sẽ không dùng but và ngược lại khi ta đã dùng but thì sẽ không dùng although, despite, in spite of.
B) Cách dùng “however, nevertheless”
► However và nevertheless thường được sử dụng để nổi bật sự tương phản giữa hai câu. Ở phía sau however, và nevertheless ta sẽ thường đặt thêm dấu phẩy.
► Cách dùng however (bất kể như thế nào, tuy nhiên, dù cho... thế nào đi nữa)
Cấu trúc: However, + subject + verb
Ex: He is a young player. However, his performance is like a superstar.
C) Cách dùng nevertheless
► Cấu trúc: Nevertheless, + subject + verb
Ex: He is tired. However, he takes part in the show.
However/ nevertheless + adjective or adverb
Ex: However thick the snow is, I will go out now.
Nevertheless thick the snow is, I will go out now.
II. BÀI TẬP
2) Complete the sentences, using although, despite/in spite of. Sometimes, two answers are possible ( Page 19 )
